Take a Tour of the App

About This Project

Ophidia began as a portfolio project and developed into a six-month collaboration with Dr. Peter Uetz, curator of the Reptile Database, and researcher Dan Durback. I was brought on to design a mobile app that could identify snakes using observable traits - something researchers, conservationists, and field crews could actually use offline.

What started as a simple filter evolved into a working prototype that currently handles over 600 species. Every part of it, from the database schema to the interface, was built from scratch with field usability in mind.

Core Features

  • Offline-first architecture – no signal required
  • 600+ species and counting
  • Dynamic multi-step ID filtering
  • Swipeable image galleries with attribution
  • Favorites list stored locally

Planned Future Development

  • Support for additional snake species
  • Refinements to the scoring algorithm based on testing feedback from both the scientific community and general enthusiasts
  • Data packaging to support species across global regions
  • Map graphics reflecting real world geographic observation data
